Now if my mom were to call me on a Sunday, maybe perhaps I wouldn't have to change the subject. Because recently I discovered that on Sundays from 12pm-3pm, Crocodile Lounge has free omelettes (in addition to free pizza) with any $5 Mimosa or Bloody Mary, in addition to free pizza with every drink. So come Sunday if you wake up in the mood for an omelette and a brunch-like drink, without the cost of brunch, then you at least know one spot where you can satisfy that craving.
"Once in a while I'll order an omelet, 'cause I'm not very good at making omelets." --Cheryl Hines3/21/2014 So my mom and I try to touch base with each other 2-3 times a week. We used to call each other almost every day, but then my schedule got hectic and with the differences in our schedules, we don't get to talk as often as we'd like. But one thing that hasn't changed about our calls is this -- every time we get on the phone with each other, the first thing she'll ask me is if I've had breakfast. And she gets mad when I tell her I didn't, so sometimes I try to change the subject real quick in hopes that she won't notice. Other times I'll tell her I'll eat once we get off the phone. And other times...well we won't talk about those other times.

I can't even begin to count the number of times I've gone out with friends for a couple of drinks and have come down with a serious case of the drunchies, which can be annoying if I'm at one of my favorite spots that doesn't serve grub. And I know I can't be the only one who's ever had that problem. And we all know how annoying that can be.
Well here's a bar where you won't ever have to worry about that problem -- Alligator Lounge in Brooklyn. With every drink purchased, you get a free personal pan pizza. I kid you not. Artichoke Pizza it is not, but it's not a bad deal. And for those of you may not be beer drinkers like myself, but like a good cider -- try the Spiced Cider. It's amazing!! "'It Girl' is such a weird term. It implies I go to parties and drink champagne." -- Carey Mulligan11/6/2013 So I have been SERIOUSLY neglecting A lotus and some... all semester long. Don't blame me -- blame the pressures of grad school. Luckily though, I met with my academic advisor yesterday to plan out my schedule for next semester, and it turns out I should have a little bit more free time on my hands to keep up with this lovely project of mine. I'll drink to that.
And speaking of drinking, anyone who is looking for something to do from 5:30-7:00 pm TODAY, November 6th, is just in luck. The bar at David Burke at Bloomingdale's on 3rd Avenue is having a complimentary tasting of FREE Laurent Perrier Champagne to celebrate the newest addition to their wine collection. There'll also be passed hors d'oeuvres. Normally I'd go, but I have something called a job that I have to go to. Plus as part of my healthier living kick I've been on these past few months, I've pretty much been trying to limit my drinking to the weekends since I promised myself I'd be more svelte by the time graduation rolls up in May. That.... PLUS...the last time I went to one of these things, after 3 free overflowing glasses of wine and champagne at a handbag party at Saks Fifth Avenue, I ended up being "impulsive" and bought a pair of $500 Cartier Sunglasses. Yes I still do have those sunglasses. Yes I still wear them. No I don't feel like being that impulsive again...at least not for another 10 months or so. So go be an "It Girl" for the both of us and drink plenty of champagne for me as well. So I have a birthday coming up, and my inbox has been getting hit with lots of special offers and free things. This is why I love the last week of September/first week of October. Because I've got my friends at various vendors e-mailing me to invite me to come visit and get something free. There's a FREE bottle of champagne with my name on it waiting for me at Kellari Taverna (they also do the same thing when your anniversary and Greek nameday are coming up). There's a FREE food/drink reward waiting for me at Starbucks. A FREE chocolate martini at Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar. FREE ice cream from Baskin-Robbins. And this is only some of the offers I've received. The list goes on. I know in the past I've gotten discounts from various retailers as well, such as Victoria's Secret and The Limited. So seriously --- get out there and enjoy your birthday.
And of course after all these freebies, I'm going to need a free membership at the gym to erase the evidence that I had a birthday. And as for me being old? Pssssshhhhh. Never gonna happen. At least not mentally. So I know I've said I'm a wine drinker. But what a lot of people don't know about me is that once in a while, I like to enjoy a good scotch on the rocks. I have no idea how this came to be, but it did. Well actually I can tell you that I grew to love Jameson when I spent 6 weeks studying abroad in Ireland last year. But where my enjoyment of whisky stems from, I seriously don't know.
Don't get me wrong -- it's not something I like to dabble in on a regular basis. It's one of those things I have to be in the mood for. And it's not one of those things where I down glass after glass. I kind of like to just sip on and enjoy one once in a while. One of the reasons why my guy friends refer to me as a "guy's girl". I'm not really your fruity girly-girl drink type. So it's been a while since I had some scotch. The last time I drank some was in Ireland, after one of the girls who was in the program with me, had just returned from a weekend trip to Scotland. Now mind you, I've always wanted to go to Scotland to look for Nessie, so I'm jealous that she got to go. But I got over it when she decided to share some of her honey Scotch with me. And it was amazing!! And since it's been over a year since I last had some good Scotch, imagine how excited I was to hear about Raise the Macallan, an exclusive FREE Scotch tasting taking place from September 17-20 at The Altman Building. But fear not my non-NYC friends -- there are actually quite a few tastings taking place around the country. To find one that's closest to your neck of the woods, you'll have to visit their website. And as always -- drink responsibly. And my disclaimer of no responsibility on my part for your actions still holds true here. So we all know how much I love my wine. I love sipping on it with a straw from a mini bottle while at the movies. Drinking it out of a mason jar when there are no wine glasses to drink out of. Having some Cupcake Vineyards with a cupcake.
And we all know how I justify my love of wine using the Bible. And just to clarify -- I don't go drinking wine 24/7 because contrary to belief, I have responsibilities and all that good adult stuff. And I guess this would be a good spot to put an advisory of some sort telling you to drink responsibly...and maybe put a disclaimer that I hold no responsibility for any of your actions...NONE WHATSOEVER. And I think that puts me in the clear. (Oh goodness -- I just realized every sentence in the previous paragraph started with the word "And". I'm pretty sure English teachers everywhere are ready to throw a book at me for that.) So you can only imagine how happy I felt today when one of my girlfriends tuned me into the Wine Essence Wine Lovers Party going on next Thursday, 8/29 at Aspen Social Club. Guests get to meet, mingle and network with other wine lovers. Oh and did I mention there's going to be a COMPLIMENTARY wine and cheese tasting from 6:30 - 7:30pm??? That's right --- FREE!!!!!!! But only if you RSVP. Oh and it's business casual attire. Oh and if anybody knows George Carlin, tell him to hit me up. I'll be more than glad to tell him which wine goes well with Captain Crunch. Now I'm not exactly a Ke$ha fan, but I'm not afraid to admit -- I actually do like the song. Many a times I have had so much fun dancing up a storm to this song at my local watering hole. But that's besides the point.
Whatever. Moving on... So the weekend is upon us, and I recently discovered the wonderful world of Sōsh. And when I say recently, I mean like sometime this week recently. Heck, I've been engaged in so many different projects this week between my internship, my freelancing, and my own personal life projects, I wouldn't even be surprised if it was yesterday (because I definitely know it wasn't today). But that's besides the point. Sōsh is a new way at having a "social" life by "reinventing the way people discover the world around them" (I don't believe in plagiarism so that's directly quoted from the Sōsh website). It's a website that's dedicated to helping you find and plan activities in your city so that you don't have to waste time trying to find something to do. Which is really ironic, because you can easily waste an hour just sitting and playing around on Sōsh. So how does it work? You build a profile (for lazy people like myself when it comes to filling out forms, you can just create a profile using your Facebook details). You fill in what your favorite neighborhoods are, what you love about your city, and the types of activities you want to try. You get recommendations based on your preferences for fun and unique activities to try. You can bookmark and share your favorites. If I understand the gist of it, it's like Pinterest, which interestingly enough, I have NOT gotten into. I kind of like the concept of Sōsh because it helps making things easier when trying to make plans with friends and we're tired of doing the same old thing and going to the same old place. Right now Sōsh is only available for San Francisco and New York, with plans to add Boston, Chicago and LA soon. So check it out . If you like it -- awesome. If it's not your thing, then that's fine too. And who knows -- maybe you'll find your big weekend plans on here. As for me, I'll be hitting up a wedding this weekend -- Congratulations Maurice & Yoko!! So I highly doubt I will be doing anything on my Sōsh lists. First off, I'm intrigued that when I looked up quotes about Japanese Sake, the above quote from the Bible came up. Because anyone who knows me knows I love my wine. I absolutely love it. In fact, many a times I have defended my love of wine to people by referring to the Bible (and now that I have come across the quote from the first letter of Timothy, I have yet another defense).
I think wine is one of those perfect year-long drinks. I've always enjoyed whites during the spring & summer, and reds during the fall & winter. I love going to wine tastings and being introduced to new wines. Always looking for new wine bars. I love wine in all its different forms. Red. White. Sangria. Mulled. Chilled. Even a glass of Japanese Sake. And speaking of Sake, there's a complimentary Gekkeikan Sake tasting at Sen NYC this Thursday, August 8th from 5:30pm - 7:30pm. No RSVP necessary. Sen is hosting this tasting to celebrate the launch of their SAKE-To-ME Tuesdays & Thursdays, which will feature half-priced Sake by the glass and bottle during Happy Hour. So if you're a wine fan like I am and you're into Sake, why not? |
